Alicia, Jen, & Laura, Founding Mamas of Mom U
Mom University was the brainchild of 3 Moms – Jen Colucci, Alicia Martin, and myself, Laura Bagnarol. Jen and Alicia are the founders of the widely popular Mommy blog, The Mommy Dash. If you follow them, you know that they are all about making us Moms laugh and empowering us to be our best selves. They keep it real and remind us that we are all in this together!
I’m the founder of the Pigskin Princess Project, a local flag football empowerment program for girls. I started my company (Be Big Be Brave LLC) to inspire people to be their big, brave selves through compelling educational, and recreational programs. My brain is CONSTANTLY thinking up new program ideas. One such idea kept brewing over and over in my head and it involved hosting some sort of BIG awesome Conference for women.
An Unexpected Christmas Gift
Rewind to December 2017. I approached Jen at a mutual friend’s Christmas party and introduced myself. I knew Jen was a teacher at my kids’ school and that she was also one of the co-creators of The Mommy Dash. As Jen and I talked, and talked, and talked, I quickly realized that she would be the perfect person to partner with about this Woman Conference idea that wouldn’t leave me alone. A few months later, a Zoom call was scheduled and I “met” Alicia. As we talked, I learned that Jen and Alicia had also had what they called a “Mom Expo” idea brewing around in their heads for a while now too!
As Moms, Jen, Alicia and I often feel overwhelmed at the amount of information out there that we should or need to know. Moms often need problems solved but lack the time to learn more about how to solve them. The three of us are the type who long for crash courses on certain topics related to Mommying and have often found ourselves saying, “There should be a class on that.” As we brainstormed, we also thought it would be so great to have moms get together and just share with each other – in a supportive setting without judgements or drama! There are so many moms out there who know so much about different things or a whole lot about one specific thing. We are masters at juggling so many different roles and schedules. And with all that we have going on, one thing is for sure: We are always trying to be better at something, whether it’s for our kids, our families or for ourselves. With all the information out there having to do with parenting (and beyond), we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to have everything all in one place?’
On top of all this, if you are like us, you crave YOU time. Because it’s often difficult to find that precious recharge time that every Mom needs, we also envisioned an event where Moms can take the time to relax and be taken care of for a change…because we know that when we are rested and replenished, we smile more and lose it less.
So what if we were to offer Moms an event – at a beautiful venue with inspiring Speakers on hot topics related to Mommying, with advice, tips, self-care services, where the coffee is flowing, and there are NO INTERRUPTIONS while we think, eat, and use the bathroom.
This event came to be called Mom University because college, for us, was about learning and growing. It was also about having a good time. My college experience is definitely high up on the “best years of my life” list and not just because I could nap daily and sleep in but also because of the amazing friendships I formed with incredible women. Mom U is about recapturing a little bit of all of that. So whether you have your PhD or GED, we hope you will come learn, relax, and party with us!
